Why it exists
Every other Bible app assumes something
- That the network will be there when you open it.
- That you can afford the data to pull down a chapter.
- That your phone was made in the last five years.
- That you will not mind an advertisement between you and a psalm.
- That sooner or later, you will pay.
Not one of those holds for most of the people this was built for.
So we stopped assuming. Every decision below follows from designing for the week the cable breaks rather than the week it does not.
What it does

There is no roadmap page here promising the rest later. These work, offline, on a cheap phone, on the day the app is released.

Journals, requests and conversations are encrypted, kept out of analytics, and never used to train a model. Not ours, and not anyone else in the chain.
Emmaus
It can point at a verse. It cannot write one.
This is not a promise made to a language model in a prompt and hoped for. Emmaus is never handed the ability to type scripture. It writes a reference, the app resolves that reference against the Bible on your phone, and the words you read are the words the translators wrote.
A reference that does not exist resolves to nothing, and nothing is what you see. Ten separate layers stand between a question and an answer, and the one that matters most is the one that makes inventing a verse impossible rather than discouraged.
Why it matters
A made up verse, said warmly and confidently to someone at their lowest, is a specific kind of harm that an apology afterwards does not undo.
What happened on the road to Emmaus?
The road to Emmaus is in Luke 24. Two disciples walk to a village outside Jerusalem, and someone joins them.
They do not recognise him until he breaks bread.

The promise we will not break
Giving buys you nothing
Donations keep the servers running and the voices recorded. They do not unlock a feature, remove an advertisement, raise a limit or move anyone up a queue, because there are no advertisements, no limits and no queue.
Every person who opens Ardent Word gets the same app, whether they have given nothing or given every month for a decade. That is not a launch promise with a quiet expiry date on it. It is the reason a foundation is building this instead of a company.
So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.
The name
All three names are in one verse
And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?”
Ardent is the burning. The Word is the Scriptures opened. Emmaus is the road they were walking when it happened.
They did not recognise him until he broke the bread. The point of the story is not that they were clever. It is that he walked with them first.
